This panel explores the strange poetry and cultural politics of giallo film titles and their English translations. We invite work that dissects how translation shapes tone, genre, and meaning—sometimes sharpening the blade, sometimes dulling it. From euphemism to exploitation, we’ll investigate how naming practices reframe Italy’s most lurid cinematic exports.

This panel invites papers that slash into the seductive language of giallo film titles and their often dissonant English translations. Somewhere between a whisper and a scream, these titles—L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo, Sette note in nero, La morte cammina con i tacchi alti—tease, mislead, and titillate. What happens when they cross linguistic borders, becoming The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Psychic, or Death Walks on High Heels? This panel explores the translation of giallo titles as a site of cultural transformation and genre distortion—where violence, sex, mystery, and style collide in language.

We seek work that treats the giallo title as more than marketing: as affective trigger, poetic gesture, and linguistic sleight of hand. Submissions may examine how translation reconfigures tone, symbolism, and audience expectation; how wordplay and euphemism survive—or don’t—across languages; and how cultural and historical anxieties shape naming practices. From the baroque to the blunt, giallo titles form their own bloody lexicon. Let’s decode it.
