Abstract

This paper argues that  Pauline Hopkins employed Hagar's Daughter: A Story of Southern Caste Prejudice to address the predicament of post-Civil War African Americans and to challenge gender roles and patriarchy through her portrayal of her female detective.

Presenter Biography

Jeneen K. Surrency, Ph.D., is an alumna of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) and Florida State University, both located in Tallahassee, Florida. Presently, she holds the position of associate professor in the Department of English and Modern Languages at FAMU. Her areas of expertise encompass African American, American, and women’s studies.
